The Car Import Process

All types

National Homologation – The national homologation number must be requested online from the Institute of Mobility and Transport (IMT) within 20 days of the vehicle’s entry into Portugal.

Vehicle Inspection – It is mandatory to have the vehicle inspected at an authorized inspection center for registration. This center will issue the Model 112 Inspection Certificate. This procedure must be carried out within the first 20 days from the entry of the vehicle in Portugal.

Application For Registration In Portugal – Once the ISV (Imposto sobre Veículos – Vehicle Tax) is paid (or tax exemption is granted), a national registration plate printed on the DAV (Declaração Aduaneira de Veículo – Vehicle Customs Declaration) is assigned – normally, after payment, customs can take up to 5 working days to assign the plate.

Within 60 days from the date of assignment of the national license plate in the DAV, the owner must apply for a registration certificate from the IMT, the Single Motor Vehicle Document.

Purchasing a License Plate – The owner must also purchase a license plate from an authorized dealer.

Applying For Car Insurance – The conclusion of a car insurance contract in Portugal is mandatory.

Property Registration – Within the same period of 60 days after the date of the national registration at the DAV, it is necessary to apply for the registration of the car to obtain the Portuguese Single Car Document after the IMT has issued the registration certificate.

Payment of the IUC – The IUC (Imposto Único de Circulação – Single Circulation Tax) must be paid annually in the month of registration. However, it must also be paid at the time of registration (it must be paid within 90 days from the date of assignment of the national registration at the DAV).

From EU

Vehicle Customs Declaration – It is necessary to obtain together with a customs agent the DAU (Documento Administrativo Único – Customs Importation Declaration)

Tax Payment / Exemption Request ISV and VAT must be paid within 10 days after the issuance of the DAV and the settlement note.

( For clients outside of EU only vehicles acquired less than 6 months ago or with less than 6,000 kilometers are subject to VAT. )
The importation of vehicles by persons who change their residence to Portugal may be exempt from taxation provided the following conditions are met:
– The owner has resided in the country of origin for at least 6 months before transferring his residence to Portugal.
– The owner has acquired the vehicle in the country of origin at least 6 months before the transfer of residence.
– The application must be submitted within 12 months after the change of residence to Portugal.

Outside the EU

Identification document

Driving license

NIF

Password to access the personal area of the Portuguese Tax Agency’s website

Vehicle Identification Document issued in the country of origin

Certificate of Conformity (COC)

Document proving the acquisition of the vehicle by the owner (invoice, sales contract, etc.)

Official certificate of residence from the country of origin, stating the date of registration as a resident in that country and the date of commencement and cancellation of such residence.

Document of daily life that accredits the residence in the country of origin in the last 6 months (receipts of household income, water consumption, electricity, payroll, employment contract, etc.).

Certificate of registration as a citizen of the European Union obtained in Portugal.
